Snow & Coyotes

We got a huge snow storm the other day, so Jewel and I took full advantage. With our new Bucas Riding Rugs from Brubachers, we suited up in our ski coats and snow pants and set out into the falling snow. We went bareback for the natural seat heaters and went through a snow covered hiking trail, Beamer Conservation.

We were enjoying the winter wonderland, so we extended our ride, Kira, our faithful dog alongside. We headed down some side streets for a bit, but with the wind picking up, we were going to turn home. I wanted to go through the orchard we usually ride through, and Jewel wanted to go on the street because she was worried about Kira running into the Coyotes we regularly saw in the Orchard. So we split up, Jewel turned around and I went through the Orchard. Despite Jewel calling Kira repeatedly, she followed me. I should have turned around to be safe, but my stubborn pride got the best of my, so Lux and I continued through the Orchard. Sure enough we were about to turn a corner when Kira bolted off like her life depended on it. I started calling her but she was gone. My stomach sank, I knew what she was running after. I kept Lux headed towards home, knowing my only hope of getting Kira away from the coyotes was to get her to follow me. I look back and suddenly Kira is running towards me, three coyotes behind her. I'm calling her name to follow me, well more like screaming, Lux and I cantering through knee deep snow.
The coyotes followed us for a bit, but I could tell they weren't seriously pursuing us. Nonetheless we continued quickly towards home. The whole time, I'm turning around, waiting to see if they appear out of the vineyard or orchard trees. Kira running right alongside me and Lux. She looks up at me blinking away the ice that's frozen on her eyelids. That was close, we both seem to say to each other. Lux was great, happy to canter through the snow. Thank goodness we were headed towards home, the only time him being barn sour was a good thing!
Since it's been so cold and icy the last couple days, we haven't been heading out for more than an hour and a half, but we get out everyday! We had the Barefoot Trimmer come out last week, so with Dwayne's knowledge (who is awesome and we'd highly recommend) we're focusing on conditioning their hooves, and taking care to avoid stone bruises and getting the hooves harder & stronger. We have our boots coming in the mail from Brubacher's which will help protect their hooves on all terrain. We had the vet out on Wednesday, the horses got a soundness evalution, their shots, and a diet plan to help them pack on some more weight. With the help from Greenhawk and Brubacher's, we're feeling much more prepared equipment wise. The next couple weeks will be focused on nutrition and weight gain, conditioning the body and hooves, hobbling and picket line training, standing while being tied and not tied, and working on Lux being barn sour.
More updates to come!
